Prof. OOI Beng Chin will introduce an end-to-end analytics solution, and then present UStore, a universal storage system for supporting next generation applications. Today's storage systems expose abstractions which are either too low-level (e.g., key-value store, raw-block store) that they require developers to re-invent the wheels, or too high level (e.g., relational databases, GitHub) that they lack generality to support many classes of applications such as blockchain. To address the problem, Pr. OOI Beng Chin designed and implement a new general distributed data storage system that has rich semantics. This storage delivers three key properties, namely immutability, sharing and security, which unify and add values to many classes of today's applications, and which also open the door for new applications.
Beng Chin is a Distinguished Professor of Computer Science, NGS faculty member and Director of IDMI at the National University of Singapore (NUS), and an adjunct Chang Jiang Professor at Zhejiang University. He obtained his BSc (1st Class Honors) and PhD from Monash University, Australia, in 1985 and 1989 respectively. His research interests include database, distributed processing, and large scale analytics, in the aspects of system architectures, performance issues, security, accuracy and correctness. Beng Chin was the recipient of ACM SIGMOD 2009 Contributions award, a co-winner of the 2011 Singapore President's Science Award, the recipient of 2012 IEEE Computer Society Kanai award, 2013 NUS Outstanding Researcher Award, 2014 IEEE TCDE CSEE Impact Award, and 2016 China Computer Federation (CCF) Overseas Outstanding Contributions Award. He is a fellow of the ACM, IEEE, and Singapore National Academy of Science (SNAS).
